Aluminum, Heavy Metal Toxicity, and Alzheimer’s?

Not according to Dr. Chris Exley, PhD, of Keele University in UK, an expert on aluminum toxicity. Dr. Exley has been studying the impact of aluminum on the human body since 1984 and states:

“There has been a strong link between human exposure to aluminum and Alzheimer’s disease for half a century or more.”

  1. Dr. Exley is not alone in his thinking. He is part of a growing number of experts making the link between aluminum toxicity and conditions like autism, diabetes, neuropathy, and cancer, as well as Alzheimer’s. See below.

Alzheimer’s Disease affects 50 million people in the world, and this is projected to more than double to 131 million people by 2050. You are an intelligent health consumer (or else you wouldn’t be reading this blog!). As such, it is up to you to be aware of what aluminum does in the body, where it comes from, and more importantly how to minimize your risk of aluminum toxicity.

2. A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease (JAD) on January 13, 2020, supports a growing body of research that links human exposure to aluminum with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Researchers found significant amounts of aluminum content in brain tissue from donors with familial AD. The study also found a high degree of co-location with the amyloid-beta protein, which leads to early onset of the disease.

“This is the second study confirming significantly high brain accumulation in familial Alzheimer’s disease, but it is the first to demonstrate an unequivocal association between the location of aluminum and amyloid-beta in the disease. It shows that aluminum and amyloid-beta are intimately woven in the neuropathology,” explained lead investigator Christopher Exley, PhD, Birchall Centre, Lennard-Jones Laboratories, Keele University, Staffordshire, UK.

Many scientists are aware of past research which had concluded that the aluminum found in everyday products, such as deodorants, is associated with neurodegenerative illnesses and forms of dementia, like Alzheimer’s. The scientists examined the presence of aluminum in the brains of donors with a family history of Alzheimer’s.

Upon analysis, the researchers found that aluminum was present in the same areas of the brain as the tangles of protein that appear in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. The study also found that aluminum itself might play a role in forming the tangles and plaques that precede the onset of Alzheimer’s.

3. According to a study issued in the International Journal of Electrochemical Science, when aluminum foil is exposed to high temperatures, it results in leaching of the aluminum into your foods!

The research team prepared minced meat in six different food solutions using citric acid, tomato juice, apple cider vinegar, spices, and salt. Then, they tested the cooked and prepared meat for aluminum levels. What they find out is that cooking with aluminum foil leads to high than acceptable levels of aluminum in foods, according to the acceptable amounts declared by the World Health Organization.

When the levels of aluminum in the body exceed acceptable levels, aluminum toxicity occurs. Researchers report that high aluminum exposure can lead to changes in the anatomy of the brain, decreased nervous activity, memory loss, headaches, mental confusion, heartburn, dryness of skin, blood disorders, liver and kidney damage, as well as an increased risk of developing ADHD, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Here are a few easy things you can do:

#1. Avoid Products that Contain Aluminum.

The first step in any detoxification program is to always stop more toxins from entering your body. Here are some of the most common sources of aluminum toxicity and some suggestions on alternatives:

  • Pharmaceuticals: Aluminum can be found in many drugs like aspirin, antacids, analgesics, anti-diarrheal medications, and others. Aluminum-containing pharmaceuticals may account for 99% of a person’s toxic aluminum intake.
  • Commercial deodorant: Switch to a natural deodorant. Be sure it clearly says “aluminum free” on the package. This includes so-called “natural crystal” deodorants, which may contain aluminum.
  • Processed Foods: Aluminum can be found in foods like baking powder, flour, salt, cocoa, cake mixes, frozen dough, pancake mixes, self-rising flours, processed cheese, and additives like food dyes. Aluminum is used in powders as a leavening agent, emulsifier, and anti-caking ingredient. You can check the ingredient list for the word “aluminum”, however if the quantity is less than .05 g per serving, it won’t be listed. You can try switching to a brand labeled “aluminum free.”
  • Aluminum cookware: Cooking with aluminum significantly increases a food’s aluminum content. Aluminum cookware is sometimes coated with a nonstick film to separate your food from the aluminum. However, this coating can be penetrated by acidic foods like tomatoes and lemon juice. Even normal wear and tear allows toxic aluminum to get into your food. I recommend replacing all aluminum-based and Teflon cookware with glass, iron, or safe ceramic. You can bake in glass instead of putting them on the grill wrapped in aluminum foil. Store leftovers in glass containers. Use bamboo steamers instead of metal vegetable steamers.
  • Restaurant food: A quick visit to your local food service supply store will show you almost all restaurants use aluminum. It is cheaper than glass or stainless steel. What to do? Eat home-cooked food. Reduce your cooked or acidic choices while dining in a restaurant. Raw food has less contact with aluminum pots and pans.
  • Aluminum foil: Food cooked or stored in aluminum foil is another source, especially hot and acidic foods. Make the switch to aluminum foil alternatives as soon as possible.
  • Aluminum cans: Cans are pre-treated with a layer of Bisphenol A, or “BPA” to protect aluminum from leaching into your body. However, sadly, drinking from plastic lining can expose you to toxic levels of BPA. Dented cans are dangerous sources of aluminum leakage, and are not allowed to be sold. Although aluminum cans are recyclable, approximately half of all aluminum cans end up in incinerators or landfills, and back into our water supply and our bodies.
  • Vaccines: Almost every vaccine on the market has a measure of aluminum in it, some more than others. The choice to vaccinate yourself and your family is a personal one. Just be sure you know the facts before you get any shots.
  • Drinking water: Aluminum is often used by local treatment plants to purify water from lakes and reservoirs, which then makes its way back into groundwater. Aluminum sulfate is often added to remove fine particles too small to be filtered.
  • Chemtrails: Geo-engineered aerosols from planes wind up in the air we breathe. These are a source of aluminum and other chemicals. Drink lots of water and be sure to get in some natural heavy metal chelators, such as spirulina (see below). Cover the vegetables in your kitchen garden when you see heavy sprays overhead.

Taking these actions against aluminum will help reduce your exposure greatly. But, during this modern “Age of Aluminum,” it is safe to say that just about everyone has some amount of toxic aluminum exposure.

Here are three other major actions you can take to detox aluminum from your system directly:

#2. Consume Foods That Contain Silica

Silica is needed for many functions in the body. It can have anti-aging effects as it helps to reinforce collagen elasticity in body tissues, and prevents arterial plaque from clogging up blood flow. Silica is also an important component for building bone, helps process key nutrients like magnesium and vitamin K2, and is vital for maintaining a strong cardiovascular system. Silica is also an antioxidant. As such, it can be a blood detoxifier.

Most importantly, silica has been found to reduce aluminum levels drastically in the body. It does this by binding with its molecules and extracting them out of brain cells and ultimately out of the body through urine and other means.

Ground-breaking research done by Dr. Exley found that water high in silicic acid (oxygenated silica) had a positive effect on autistic children. Exley has found that aluminum levels were lower in the children by 50 to 70 percent who drank this kind of water.

He then did the same study with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) patients. After 13 weeks of drinking high-silica water, the same results were achieved. In the AD patients, eight out of fifteen no longer showed neurological deterioration and three showed “substantial cognitive increase.”

Dr. Exley used Spritzer (a Malaysian bottled water) for the study, but other waters that contain high amounts of silica include Volvic and Fiji (Fiji comes in a BPA-free bottle). His suggested protocol for helping to remove aluminum from the brain is to consume 1.5 liters of high-silicic water for at least 5 days. He suggests drinking the entire 1.5 liters within an hour for the best results. Higher aluminum toxicity levels may require higher amount of water.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is another great source of silica since it is made up mostly of the substance. Diatomaceous earth is actually millions of tiny, fossilized aquatic microorganism called “diatoms” that are ground up into a fine, white powder. Besides aluminum detoxification, DE also chelates other heavy metals, helps with GI health, and can give you more energy.

Please make sure your Diatomaceous earth is FOOD GRADE, or it could cause great harm. Do not take the so-named chemical used in swimming pools!

In addition to high-silicic acid waters and DE, cucumbers, bananas, bentonite clay, and horsetail herb also contain high amounts of silica.

#3. Consume Foods That Detoxify the Body From Heavy Metals

Add at least one of the following nutritional substances to your diet every day. All of these not only have the ability to detox the body from heavy metals, but are also neuro-protectants and immune system boosters:

  • cold pressed unrefined organic coconut oil
  • chia and flaxseed
  • milk thistle
  • vitamin C (and foods rich in this vitamin)
  • spirulina and chlorella
  • foods such as garlic, cilantro, and parsley that can help eliminate heavy metals such as aluminum and mercury from your body
  • fresh, filtered water (and plenty of it!)

#4. Use Other Heavy Metal Detoxification Modalities

Finally, there are a lot of modalities other than foods and supplements that can help you flush out aluminum and other heavy metals. In research studies, high infrared saunas have been shown to not only trim body fat but also detox xenobiotics, i.e. foreign chemicals. These include heavy metals.

In addition, full-mat Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy has also been shown to help with detoxification through boosting natural antioxidants and immune responses in the body. Heliotherapy (salt therapy), mineral baths, and regular exercise also help to flush toxins from the body.

With a little knowledge and the right foods, supplements, and healthy behaviors, you CAN reduce your toxic aluminum load before its proven health effects happen to you. In addition, by keeping your immune system as vital as possible through the right diet and managing stress, you can go a long way in helping your body to detoxify the heavy metals we are exposed to every day, and do so naturally.

Orthosilic acid. Shoot for 45 mg/day (all consumed within one hour). If you take Biosil and take 9x the dose listed on the bottle you will get the same amount of silica as a bottle of Fiji water.

The form of silica you need to remove aluminum is OSA (orthosilicic acid). The amount you need to remove aluminum from the body is only found in mineral waters. There are many mineral waters that have enough OSA. My husband Dennis N Crouse who is a chemist has tested silica supplements for OSA and none of the supplements have enough. If you want an alternative to buying bottled water you can make your own water. My husband has developed a recipe which you can find on the web. There is a you tube video on how to make the water. Search on Silicade.

Is it toxic when you just touch it or have in the house without putting it in the oven?.

Hi Kelly, thank you for your comment. My understanding is that aluminum is MOST toxic when heated with acidic foods, especially like tomato or lemon. I don’t know how toxic it is when you just touch it cold, or hot. My solution is to just eliminate all aluminum from my home. I don’t use it at all because I don’t mind being flexible in my habits, and I prefer to be sure. Ha Ha! Best wishes for your delicious health! Jane

Rather than hunting for high silica water, BioSil is a supplement that can be easily found and taken.

BioSil does not have enough OSA to remove aluminum. Dennis N Crouse who is a chemist has tested Biosil. Mineral water is the only source of enough OSA. You need 48 ppm of OSA. 10 drops of Biosil only gives you 5.8 ppm of OSA.

You need to make a correction, you must emphasize that the Diatomaceous earth MUST BE FOOD GRADE !!!!! This is so important because the Diatomaceous earth used for swimming pool filter will kill you ! and if it doesn’t kill you, it will give you lung cancer. I knew somebody that put non food grade Diatomaceous earth in their dogs drinking water to remove parasites and it killed their dog. Please specify food grade Diatomaceous earth

Thank you for a useful page, very good information indeed.
Dr Exley suggested 1.5 lt of high silica water in an hour every day for 5 days to remove aluminium from the brain. Would silica supplemets be just as effective but without the bulk of water which could be hard to get down so much in one hour. Biosil have a product commonly used for collagen, nails and hair, but it is just choline and silica drops, the silica content is 1 drop contains 1mg silica. So Fiji water contains 93mg silica per litre, but it also is high in arsenic, so I have read.
So perhaps buy a silica supplement that has been tested. But great information and I will give it a try.
    Thanks again
    Greg

Actually the 1.5 litres was for a study to see how much aluminum was excreted. Chris Exley recommends drinking 1 litre of silica water a day. Dennis N Crouse who is a chemist tested Biosil and it does not have enough OSA to remove aluminum. He has a table in his books. OSA is orthosilicic acid and is the form of silica needed to remove aluminum. He also tested diatomaceous earth, bamboo and several other silica supplements. None of these supplements had enough OSA. There are many waters from all over the world that are high in silica. Regarding Fiji having arsenic – Leavey-Roback tested 3 bottles of Fiji, the readings are 0.81ppb 0.078 0.87 – another test 1.00 ppb The US EPA standard for drinking water is 10 ppb of arsenic
